As Days Go By

I went to the thrift store in town on Thursday.

These napkins/dishtowels with added rikrak were found for $1.00. The plastic tote was $2.00 and is very similar to one I found at a Rhode Island thrift called, The Blue Mitten. I love my bag and carry everything in it from beach stuff- library books, so this will be for the baby when she gets a little older. Just like mama!

I found 2 coats. They're not necessarily for winter and they don't really button, but I've always wanted a trench. They both fit now ( without being buttoned) and will fit after the baby arrives. In the mean time I'll use them for the rain & cooler weather. The belted one was $5.00, the other was free! The woman was going to throw it out!

This is a huge ball of yarn. It is actually made up of 5 other skeins. I have a big basket full of acrylic & wool blend yarn.. so I decided to roll them all together and make something. I'm using a size 35 needle to knit myself some kind of crazy colorful wrap.

Alone, they were just a boring skein, but together they are kinda sweet!
Speaking of sweet, I found these (new to me) 100 calorie dark chocolate bars at
Trader Joe's They're kinda delicious! They only have a few ingredients (nothing scary) and they even have milk chocolate if you don't like dark. They're a yummy after dinner treat and they don't seem to bother my tummy. But I've also been eyeing Newman's Own cookies- they look like Hydrox or Oreo, only there is PEANUT BUTTER inside! Can you imagine? YUM!

I'm still looking for a pretty dress. This weekend I have an event, which I won't say too much about (in case the honoree is reading this)only that I'm in the process of doing the music and choosing the right thing to wear. This may end up being jeans and a cute shirt at this point!

Well have a great weekend, by the looks of the weather report Fall has snuck up on us! Oh yay!

Weekly Doings

I made some Sweet Potato Pie on Monday, this was my first time making it. I may have overloaded the pie tin a little bit. I also tried to make a crust out of oats- but it turned more into a crumble of sorts. But it is still pretty tasty! I used this recipe. I liked that it called for boiling the sweet potatoes with the skin on. Although time consuming to then peel them off, they come off much easier when cooked with your hands, then they do with a peeler when uncooked.

Yesterday, I did a little curtain switch-a-roo. A larger curtain we used to divide a room in our old place- fit perfectly in our kitchen window. Lemons.. The fabric is vintage and I found several yards a year ago at one of my favorite thrift stores. I use it sparingly. For the door window, I used half of an old apron- my mom gave me years ago. There were a few spots so I put some cute little patches over them.

I wonder what the baby will think of this little place we live in. Zach is so easy going he lets me decorate however I want,my little stones, leaves and other special finds. We're both fans of yard sales, thrift stores & the-like, I hope she doesn't mind.

I've been making cuffs to stock in the shop and listing them like crazy! Zach came home with a new longer computer wire for the laptop- so believe it or not I'm more productive now that I can sit comfortably on the couch! I used the recycled flannel pillowcase, this adorable Japanese clothesline and a Lady Player dice flannel. Working with flannel print makes me happy. I've gotten half-a-dozen Joann's coupons in the last week or so, I may have to stop in and get some fleece & flannel. Yum!

As I will still be pregnant in November and possibly the begining of December ( oh Lord) I'll need a proper winter coat.. Anyone have any ideas of an affordable place for a preggo to get a winter coat? I've been thinking about checking my favorite thrifts to look for a fashionable men's coat that I can either alter (i.e. take in, applique, tie a cute belt) or an actual maternity winter coat. But I haven't had any luck yet. I did find a few dresses I'm swooning over, maybe for a shower or fancy schmancy preggo dinner party.

Well have a lovely day. I have some projects to work on and a possible thrift store trip.

Handmade Burp Cloths- HoboStyle

This is a shot of some of the burp cloths I've started making. They are cotton & soft flannel with terry cloth or flannel on the opposite side. Ikea was selling largish burp-cloth like pieces in their baby section. I bought and cut them down the middle, then had 2 pieces to use for my own burp cloth. I used some trim and patches and just tried to have fun with them.
The Deputy Dawg was given to Zach for Father's Day by his sister. I made him a matching bib, these will go specifically in his diaper bag. The Ramones cloth is all MINE!

With a bowl full of organic sweet potatoes on our table, we just aren't eating them as fast as we can. So I've been trying to find a sweet potato recipe. I've found sweet potato cornbread.. I might keep looking.

The Land of Nod catalogue came in the mail yesterday and I love this:
Two Birds, One Stone Counting Cards. This picture doesn't do them justice, but they look gorgeous!

With that I am off to start the day. I'll be listing new cuffs, vintage embellished dresses and other goodness in the shoppe
all day today! So stop by and browse! As the cooler weather wanders in,check out our coffee cuffs.. if you don't see your favorite just convo me- I love custom cuff orders!

More to come~

This is my new daily Mantra....

When I saw this little sign, on sale for 50 cents- I had to pick it up. It is now nestled on my studio wall with my other favorites.

Whew this past week- was busy. Luckily, I was able to get all of my custom orders together, wrapped and ready to go in the mail. I even started making some new burp cloths. While re-organizing the linen closet I decided to take all of the flannel pillowcases out for a project. Z is just like me and we don't really like using them to sleep with. Something about their lack of cool temperature- just makes me uncomfy. So I've decided to use them to make burp cloths for baby. They're super soft and cuddly and I thought it was a good use of recycling the material. I'll have some pics up soon.

Well aside from a possible mail trip and a jolt to the library- today will be spent knitting ( I finished the green scarf for Mom's birthday) and I'm working on my raspberry swirlie one. A lot of tidying needs to be done, proof of our lazy-lounging weekend.

Saturday night as I lie awake in bed, I started thinking about the impending Lamaze class we had the next day. I was planning to take Imodium to settle my stomach. But I don't like how the baby acts after I've taken it. Then started thinking of all of the days I may need to take it to be able to leave the house. It kinda freaked me out. I guess I was having some-kind of anxiety attack. We talked it over and decided "going" to a Lamaze class wasn't going to work. So I ordered a DVD. I know it won't be exactly as enriching as an in-person class, but the idea of taking the Imodium to learn Lamaze felt screwy to me. With my constant tummy troubles- this might be my only option. I found a very updated DVD ( some of the are ancient!). I just thought I'd share, since I had mentioned it previously here.

Figuring it out at my own pace

Well I am usually the last to know about most things, celebrities breaking up,parties being planned, my underwear showing- you know the usual. So I bring you one of my new(to me) favorite blogs,
Gala darling's Icing Blog. Okay so her blog & life is utterly addictive and she's like a cute little pixie with a tough side. I wanna put hr in my pocket and let her whisper funny things to me all day! Please check her out! She also sells super-cute cupcake merchandise, which I think I am going to need to purchase!

Yesterday, I borrowed SICKO, from the library. A documentary
by this guy and was amazed and scared as we should all be. All I will say is, if you haven't seen this- go rent it. Even if you don't agree with him, there are still some very interesting ideas & truths he shares. It also shows the way our tolerance has really changed as citizens over the years. When I worked as a case manager in the Bronx, I was working with formerly homeless adults. It was pretty sad to hear how some of them we're treated by other people at the clinics and hospitals. As if because they had fallen on hard times- they didn't deserve to be treated like humans. I urge you to check it out- you can always turn it off!

I love this color combo.. I also don't own anything monogramed and think it would be dorky-cool to do so. I'm jealous of my husband's monogramed bag that has been kicking around our station wagon for some time now. It's full of maps, jumper cables and other car necessities, like Country Living.

Although I did treat myself to the concord purple maryjanes(which have been rerouted and will hopefully arrive soon?!) I spoke of a few weeks ago, so I'll have to wait.

This weekend has a list. A list which is filling up fast with things to do, places to go & gather and of course some down time.

I've started drinking these protein drinks,
Angel Milk to help with what I may be losing due to stomach issues. They're really yummy! So far I've had Chocolate & Caramel Latte ( which I stupidly didn't realize had decaf in it- so I am holding off on it till after the pregnancy)

I finally finished a trade with the lovely, Tia of Christopher & Tia fame.
I was so backed up and still kind of am with custom orders- so when her lovely cards arrived- I knew I needed to get my bum in gear! This is what I made her. ( if you're reading Tia, I hope you like it!) I've never made a keychain like this- I kinda winged it!

My next customer order is to find a POM glass so I can then make a coffee cuff for it. I was so thrilled to hear how eco-friendly one of my customers was.

This weekend we have our first of two (6 hour long) Lamaze classes. I have a feeling that we'll be wishing we would have just gone the every other weekend route, rather than the 2 weekends in a row deal. At least they'll be serving up a continental breakfast and Zach will get to see the hospital & birthing center we'll be staying at in November. I'd be lying if I didn't say I was nervous and kind of scared. But I also think some of my tummy troubles and meeting-new-people anxieties are coming out. But it can't be all bad.. I can at least bring my pillow. How many awkward situations allow for that?

Have a great weekend~

Thursday

Regardless of where we were, I think most of us remember, 7 years ago what we were up to. I was living in a hotel, in Indiana, working as a Union Organizer. I remember a co-worker who lived upstairs calling me on the phone. I was the only one in our crew from New York. Even though I grew up an hour away from NYC, all of my coworkers and those I came into contact with, said they could tell I was from New York and greeted me with such a warm reception.

There was a party planned for my Mom, a surprise party the following weekend. I remember I was going to fly home. But there were no flights out of Indiana at the time. So I rented a car and drove 15 + hours on my own from Indiana- New York. I had nothing but the Clash & French fries to get me there. It was such an emotional time. I felt so proud that I had taken that mini-road trip by myself. I highly recommend it, only take time to relax lol I surely didn't.

Today is also one of my oldest, best friend's birthdays. We've been friends since about the age of 4.She's a remarkable person. She married, last year,a wonderful man who already had 4 little children (who are amazing in their own right)and now is probably the best step-mother ever. I just hope when our bundle arrives I can have half the patience she displays.. I know her days are not always easy. But she is so kind and genuinely good to their children it is inspiring.

Last night I finished 2 custom orders that were waiting patiently as well as a new pillow cover.

The pillow inside, was given to me by my husband's Grammy. It is a cream, with an antique hanker chief attached, I always worried it would get dirty. This way I'm preserving it- yet adding a new colorful pillow to the mix! The green is a flannel I picked up at a discount price and some of the buttons were my Grandmother's. The green polka dot trim and white ties, are recycled from a pair of pajama pants. I'm happy to add it to our pillow family.
With that I'm going to try a recipe for some Nutmeg muffins and start the day. I've got a lot of sewing to do!
be Well~
